China to Boost Advanced Tech Imports in New Five-Year Strategy

During its upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan from 2026 to 2030, China is set to significantly increase its imports of advanced technology, essential industrial components, energy resources, and premium agricultural products. This initiative, announced by the General Administration of Customs, is designed to promote industrial modernization, enhance domestic consumption, and offer Chinese consumers a broader selection of quality goods from around the globe. A key aspect of this plan is China’s intention to diversify the range of countries from which it sources these imports.

Customs officials highlighted that both imports and exports in China experienced double-digit growth in the first half of the year. Notably, import growth surpassed exports due to an upsurge in domestic demand for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer goods. This trend underscores China’s strategic focus on fostering a robust and diversified import market as part of its economic development goals.

In addition to technological imports, China is poised to expand market access for international agricultural and food products by streamlining quarantine and import approval processes. Since the beginning of the year, China has granted market access to 264 categories of agricultural and food products from 79 additional countries, with its imported food now coming from over 150 countries and regions worldwide. This move is expected to further integrate global agricultural markets with China’s growing consumer base.

Experts in China view this strategy as a commitment to enhanced market openness, diversified trade, and strengthened global economic cooperation. They believe that by increasing imports, China will not only meet the rising demand for industrial upgrading and superior consumer goods but also generate new opportunities for international exporters. This approach aligns with China’s broader objectives of economic expansion and collaboration on the global stage.

Chinese officials anticipate that the expansion of the consumer market will create significant opportunities for global businesses as domestic consumption continues to rise. The country’s emphasis on importing high-quality products and advanced technology is poised to support both its economic ambitions and the interests of international trade partners.
