Truth Social Diplomacy: Trump Touts India Talks Amid Tariff Turmoil

by admin477351

In a move characteristic of his unique communication style, President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform to tout friendly trade talks with India, even as his administration was proposing to hit the country with crippling 100% tariffs. This “Truth Social diplomacy” creates a public image of goodwill that clashes with the hardball tactics being employed behind the scenes.
“India, and the United States of America, are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations,” Trump wrote, expressing his optimism for a deal with Prime Minister Modi. This message was posted around the same time his officials were in meetings with the EU to discuss the massive new tariff plan aimed at punishing India for its ties to Russia.
This dual narrative serves multiple purposes. It allows Trump to maintain a positive public relationship with a key leader while simultaneously applying immense pressure through official channels. It also provides a potential off-ramp, allowing him to claim a victory in trade talks if the tariff threat helps extract concessions.
The strategy, however, is being played out under the shadow of a Supreme Court case that threatens to upend the entire game. If the court rules against his tariff authority, Trump’s primary source of leverage in these negotiations would vanish, turning his tough talk into an empty threat.
