Kazakhstan is set to introduce cross-border QR-code payment systems with China by the end of 2026, facilitating mobile transactions for travelers between the two nations. This move is part of a broader initiative by Kazakhstan’s National Bank to establish cross-border payment services with 11 countries, including China, India, the United Arab Emirates, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. The implementation of similar systems with additional countries is anticipated starting from mid-2027.
The agreement with China marks a significant step forward in extending the use of the yuan beyond traditional trade and investment channels into everyday consumer spending. It underscores the strengthening financial ties between Beijing and Central Asian countries, a collaboration that aligns with the objectives of the Belt and Road Initiative. This planned payment system builds on the existing cooperation between Kazakhstan and China, notably with the 2024 partnership where Kazakhstan’s Kaspi.kz teamed up with Alipay, allowing Kaspi users to make mobile payments in China.
China has been actively promoting the international use of the yuan, aiming to bolster cross-border payments and reduce reliance on the US dollar. This initiative is part of broader efforts by Beijing to expand the adoption of the digital yuan and QR-based payment platforms. The Kazakhstan-China payment collaboration is poised to enhance regional financial connectivity and could catalyze a greater adoption of yuan-based payment systems throughout Central Asia.
By establishing these cross-border payment services, Kazakhstan is not only facilitating smoother financial transactions for its citizens but also positioning itself as a pivotal player in regional economic integration. The forthcoming systems are expected to simplify the process for travelers, promoting ease of transactions and potentially boosting tourism and business travel between these countries. As these developments unfold, the financial landscape in Central Asia could witness a transformation, with Kazakhstan and China at the forefront of this digital payment evolution.
