Japan has cautiously initiated efforts to ease diplomatic tensions, marked by brief interactions between its Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and his Chinese and Russian counterparts during the ASEAN summit held in Manila. These exchanges signal a tentative step towards dialogue amid existing geopolitical strains.
In an informal exchange with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Motegi underscored the significance of maintaining bilateral dialogue to foster regional peace. While Motegi described the conversation as a short and informal discussion on bilateral relations, Chinese officials refuted the occurrence of any meeting or planned contact between the two ministers.
Motegi also engaged in a brief conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, representing the first known interaction between the top diplomats of Japan and Russia since the latter’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Their discussion focused on bilateral relations and regional issues, reflecting a cautious attempt to maintain communication despite ongoing tensions.
Despite these diplomatic overtures, Japan reaffirmed its unwavering support for Ukraine and maintained its sanctions against Russia, indicating that its international commitments remain firmly in place. Analysts emphasize the importance of dialogue for managing bilateral issues, while cautioning that these engagements should not compromise Japan’s established international stances.
