China has reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time in its history, following a dramatic 4-3 victory against France in a penalty shootout. The match, held in Rabat, ended in a goalless draw after regular time, but China’s goalkeeper Niu Ziqi emerged as the hero by saving two crucial penalties.
During the match, both teams had several opportunities to score, but neither could capitalize on their chances. France showed dominance in the first half but failed to convert, while China improved their performance in the second half after coach Ma Xiaoxu made tactical adjustments. Despite the increased intensity, the deadlock persisted, leading to a penalty shootout to decide the winner.
In the shootout, Liu Yuxi and Liu Yuke scored China’s first two penalties, while Niu Ziqi saved France’s attempt from Lea Motyka. The teams were level at 2-2 when Yang Lan and Cheng Wandi successfully converted their penalties for China. Niu’s second save against Lisa Mabilon clinched the 4-3 victory for her team.
China advanced to the knockout stage with impressive performances, topping Group E with three straight wins against Kenya (3-0), Samoa (7-0), and the United States (3-2). Their next challenge is against Brazil in the quarterfinals on November 1. Brazil secured its spot in the last eight by beating Poland 8-7 in another penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw.
