In a significant development, China and the United States have agreed to reduce tariffs on approximately $30 billion worth of goods from each side, marking a step towards easing trade tensions. This consensus was reached during their recent economic and trade consultations, with both countries aiming to implement these reductions simultaneously after completing their respective domestic procedures. The tariffs on about 90% of the covered products will be lowered to most-favoured-nation rates.

The agreement also includes an extension of the existing economic and trade arrangement from November 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027. This extension is part of ongoing negotiations aimed at establishing a longer-term trade agreement between the two nations.

In a move to bolster bilateral trade discussions, China and the US will establish a Board of Trade. Additionally, an agricultural working group will be formed to focus on market access and regulatory issues, reflecting a shared commitment to enhancing cooperation in this vital sector.

Furthermore, the two countries have agreed to create a bilateral investment board. This board will address investment opportunities, trade barriers, and policy transparency, fostering a more open dialogue on these critical economic aspects.

Amidst these developments, both nations are also committed to continuing discussions on artificial intelligence. A new communication channel has been established for AI-related incidents, with another round of talks scheduled before the end of November, underscoring the importance of collaboration in emerging technologies.
