A significant new trade deal between the US and China includes a dual pause on key restrictions. China has agreed to pause new curbs on rare earth minerals, while the US has agreed to postpone for one year a new measure that would have banned many Chinese firms from accessing US technology.
This one-year pact was sealed in a meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping. Beyond the tech and rare earth components, the deal also includes the US slashing some tariffs and export controls, and China agreeing to purchase US soybeans.
The rare earth agreement is a major de-escalation, as Trump had previously threatened 100% tariffs on the materials. The tech pause is a significant concession to Beijing, which had strongly opposed the measure.
Following the meeting, President Xi spoke at the APEC forum in South Korea, championing global cooperation. He warned nations against “breaking supply chains” and urged them to “join hands rather than letting go.”
The positive tone was mutual, with Trump calling the talks “amazing” and Xi noting “dialogue is always better than confrontation.” The two leaders are now planning reciprocal visits, with Trump scheduled to travel to China in April.
