China has achieved a significant milestone in its space endeavors with the successful maiden flight of the Long March 12B carrier rocket. On Monday, the rocket launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, entering its designated orbit and deploying the latest installment of the Spacesail Constellation communication satellites. This advancement highlights China’s expanding capabilities in space technology.

The Long March 12B, standing approximately 72 meters tall, currently holds the title of China’s most powerful single-body rocket. Its two-stage design is fueled by 10 liquid oxygen and kerosene engines, producing around 800 metric tons of thrust at launch. This impressive power enables the rocket to deliver payloads exceeding 20 tons into low-Earth orbit. The development of this rocket commenced in September 2024, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance its performance and efficiency, including high-performance propulsion, lightweight structures, optimized fuel management, and autonomous flight-control software that can address in-flight irregularities.

In a forward-looking effort, engineers are already planning for future tests aimed at recovering and reusing the rocket’s first-stage booster. The potential success of these tests could pave the way for a reusable version of the Long March 12B, which may become operational within the next few years.

This launch also contributes to the expansion of the Spacesail Constellation, a satellite network in low-Earth orbit intended to deliver high-speed global broadband internet services. With this recent mission, over 160 satellites have been deployed for the project, which ultimately targets the deployment of more than 10,000 satellites by 2030.

The successful launch of the Long March 12B not only signifies a technological achievement but also underscores the growth of China’s commercial space sector and its ambitions to enhance global satellite internet coverage. As China continues to advance its space technology, its role in the global space industry is poised to expand further.
