The opening of the Pinglu Canal in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is set to significantly reduce logistical costs and enhance trade between southwest China and Southeast Asia. By cutting more than 560 kilometers from the traditional waterway route, the canal offers a more efficient passage to the sea, which could lower transportation expenses by 18% to 30% and save over 5 billion yuan annually.
Developed at an investment of approximately 72.7 billion yuan ($10.75 billion), the 134.2-kilometer canal links Hengzhou to the Beibu Gulf. It is an integral part of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, designed to streamline connections between China’s inland areas and ASEAN markets. The canal supports vessels of up to 5,000 tonnes, facilitating a more direct route for goods such as coal, grain, minerals, new-energy materials, and automobile parts to reach overseas destinations.
This development is particularly beneficial for businesses in southwest China, which have traditionally encountered higher costs when moving goods to coastal ports. The canal’s strategic design, including three navigation hubs with twin-line ship locks, overcomes a 65-meter water level difference, while its water-recycling systems are expected to conserve over 1 billion cubic meters of water annually.
The new waterway is also anticipated to bolster economic ties between China and ASEAN, its largest trading partner. Trade volumes between China and ASEAN exceeded $1 trillion in 2025, with transactions reaching $744.41 billion in just the first seven months of 2026. The canal could further stimulate investment and enhance supply-chain integration along its route.
Environmental considerations were a key aspect of the project, with more than 98% of the excavated material being reused. Additionally, the canal features a fish passage and a wildlife crossing, highlighting efforts to mitigate ecological impacts while advancing infrastructure and trade objectives.
