Malaysian businesses could soon see increased opportunities for investment and technological collaboration as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim embarks on a strategic visit to China. During his three-day trip, Anwar aims to deepen ties with Malaysia’s largest trading partner, which could potentially boost foreign investment and cooperation in emerging technologies.

Arriving in Shanghai on Tuesday, Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, plans to engage with key Chinese political and business leaders. His itinerary includes significant events such as the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 and the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, where Malaysia is honored as a Guest Country. These platforms provide Anwar the opportunity to advocate for enhanced digital trade and international cooperation, focusing heavily on artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.

On Thursday, a high-profile meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang is scheduled in Hangzhou. This meeting is expected to further solidify the strategic partnership between the two nations, emphasizing mutual economic interests. The discussions are particularly crucial as Malaysia continues to leverage its relationship with China to strengthen its own economic prospects.

China has maintained its position as Malaysia’s leading trade partner for 17 consecutive years. From January to August this year, bilateral trade between the two countries reached an impressive US$113.82 billion. This robust economic relationship underscores the importance of Anwar’s visit in fostering even greater economic integration.

Throughout the visit, Anwar is also set to engage with Chinese business and technology leaders to encourage greater foreign investment in Malaysia. By seeking to expand collaborations in sectors like digital trade and AI, the visit could open new avenues for Malaysian businesses and further enhance the country’s economic landscape.
