As a result, Chinese companies are now required to seek prior approval before supplying these organizations, a measure China’s Commerce Ministry states is in response to Japan’s expanding military ambitions and potential nuclear-related activities. The export controls target goods, software, and technologies that could serve both civilian and military purposes.
The affected entities include Japan’s National Institute for Defense Studies and several subsidiaries of prominent defense corporations such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Electric, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. This development comes amid rising concerns over security issues between the two nations, particularly Japan’s defense strategy and its stance on Taiwan.
Japan has reacted strongly to the restrictions, deeming them unacceptable and urging China to retract the measures. Japanese officials have expressed concerns about the potential detrimental effects on the economic and trade relationship between these neighboring Asian powers. Historically, China has imposed similar export restrictions on Japanese entities, and this latest action seems to further strain the already fragile diplomatic ties.
China, however, contends that the impact of these controls is limited to a specific number of organizations and insists that normal business activities remain unaffected.
