China and EU to Strengthen Trade Ties, Address Economic Disputes

China and the European Union have pledged to deepen their trade cooperation and address existing economic differences through dialogue, following a high-level meeting in Beijing. This development comes after Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič co-chaired the second China-EU trade and investment consultation meeting.

Key discussions during the consultations focused on trade imbalances, export controls, intellectual property rights, and the trade of electric vehicles. Both sides expressed a commitment to improving market access, enhancing trade monitoring, and exploring potential tariff reductions in line with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. Regulatory issues impacting sectors such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics, and agricultural products were also on the agenda.

Electric vehicle trade emerged as a crucial topic, with the EU and China reviewing price undertakings related to the EU’s anti-subsidy case against Chinese electric vehicles. The two parties agreed to continue discussions to tackle export control concerns, aiming to facilitate compliant trade and ensure stable global supply chains.

Beyond trade, China and the EU showed interest in expanding cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, digital services, and green technology. Both sides recognized the potential for increased mutual investment and emphasized the need for fair, transparent, and predictable business environments for companies operating within their respective markets.

The consultations concluded with a commitment to implement the agreed outcomes and to continue negotiations. Future engagements include a planned ministerial-level video meeting in January 2027, followed by a third trade and investment consultation meeting in March 2027.
